Minutes "Creating a Quality Profile"
Here are the minutes of the meeting with Thomas and Christoph.
TOPICS:
TOP1: Customization of the reference quality criteria for the TeachingCulture! project
TOP2: Architecture for the quality-documentation and –assurance tool
AIM:
The aim of creating a quality profile is to adapt a very general reference framework to the specific processes of our project to ensure that we have taken all relevant aspects into account.
TOP1 Reference quality criteria
We want to give you an overview on the reference framework of quality criteria and the process of developing a quality profile for the TeachingCulture! project.
The reference framework is diveded in two parts:
1. Referece-Model for Process-Description (process modell)
The process model serves for us as a checklist to ensure, that we have thought about all aspects in the context of development and implementation of our "blended learning course". The documentation of the process facilitates the evaluation of the project and its outcomes and it will facilitate later accreditation. It is very labourintensive to do the documentation afterwards - for that reason we should do it in an ongoing manner.
We will receive a structured documentation of our project work, which helps us furthermore to remember our ideas, approaches etc.
Here you can find an overview of the exisiting processes and subprocesses of the reference model. Have a look at it and feel free to ad some comments if you have any questions about the process-model or if you think that there might be something missing, isn't detailed enough etc. LINK
2. Reference Criteria-Catalogue (criteria catalogue)
A Reference Criteria-Catalogue is a list of criteria which can be taken for evaluating the processes and subprocesses of projects. It includes other existing criteria-catalogues e.g. the web-acessibility-guidelines or criteria for software ergonomics.
For creating the quality profile you choose the processes/ subprocesses that are relevant for the project and add the relevant criteria from the catalogue. So you develop step by step a task-specific quality profile.
Here you can find an exmple of creating a quality profile for the TeachingCulture! Project. LINK
TOP2 Architecture of quality-documentation and –assurance tool
technical aspects:
visualisation: HTML + Flash
logic: PHP
data: MySQL or XML
architecture:
We plan to implement different views for the different use-cases, so that everybody can only see the information that are relevant for his tasks:
editorial-view (needed for selecting the relevant criteria and for creating the quality profile)
evaluation-view (needed to confirm the requirements)
documentation-view (needed to complete the quality profile)
11 Comments:
Hi Christoph and congratulations on getting the process of quality management going. I must admit I find the proposed process overwhelming and my first question is, who is going to fill all this in?
On my 'must do' list is getting the aims and objectives of each unit agreed and this should help you in your process. In order to help me and the rest of the group on this process I wondered if we might adopt the approach set out by Nichols in his book 'Teaching for Learning' available as a pdf file at http://www.traininc.co.nz
The book describes how we must look at Variety, Interactivity, Access, Reflection opportunities, Explicit guidance and Support to underpin effective learning. But would examining the Teaching Culture program in this way preclude or conflict with implementing your quality monitoring? This is only a suggestion and has not been discussed or agreed. Just wondered how everything could tie in.

Anne, could you specify where in the book we can find this? I looked at your link but could not figure out where I would find the information you refer to.
Laurence
Laurent: These are book pages not pdf document pages. The most useful chapter to read for an overview is Chapter 2, p24-26 for a summary, p27-30 for a brief explanation.
I'll post more about why this might be useful to the Yahoo group.
Anne,
Christoph is currently checking the source you mentioned in your mail/remark.
Although I do not have his results yet, generally I think that our reference framework is that comprehensive (as a number of stakeholders on national and international level have contributed to it) that I would assume that the main points in the book you mentioned will be covered by the framework.
We try to break down this comprehensive framework so that it is applicable to our project. When we are building the framework i.e. selecting the relevant points it would help us if you could concretely say, which aspects you want to have covered from your experience or from your background.
Just as an example: if you are convinced that interactivity is very important for the didactical concept (and your work package/the group agrees to that) - just tell us that the according criteria should be documented and we would use the proposals from you /your work package how this can be best implemented in the concept for the documentation. If in the evaluation Nicky/the quality work package can confirm that the concept works, your idea/proposal is confirmed and if the assumption can not be fully confirmed the concept would be adopted/changed for the 2nd test run. The results of the evaluation will be documented as well.
How we best proceed in documentation and evaluation we will discuss in the (informal) quality work package meeting in June in Cologne. I am aware of our limits of time ressources so that we will try to find a realistic way, which will not overwhelm project participants (I am aware that this is easy to say and hard to do - but this is what we try out in the framework of the project Teaching-Culture and to certain extents also media-net-works).
Just in case I would like to mention again, that the quality framework will not tell us, which approach is the best for our project (which I think is impossible in the field of learning, as a number of theoretic schools and also a number of good practices exist parallely, also I think the idea of the European Projects is that we experiment and find new ways, rather than following existing ones). Rather it is a checklist, which helps us to check all relevant points and to document the decisions we have taken, which is then a great basis for evaluation and later accreditation of our results.
For example the framework mentiones the criteria accessability - we decided to deal with that issue by applying the relevant Web-standard (see Marcus message and accessability guideline) for our web-pages. This can be checked in the evaluation of the project and we can present the results of the evaluation, when we want our project results to be recognized (e.g. as a course, which can be offered by public institutions, who are forced to apply the accessability standard by European Law).
